Asana, Facebook Cofounder’s Productivity App, Opens to Public

asana-2

Asana – a Sanskrit term denoting a particular posture or pose, usually used to describe Yoga postures. An odd, if fitting name for Facebook cofounder, Dustin Moskovitz’ new productivity startup (practicing Yoga asanas does, after all, enhances your concentration powers).

Asana isn’t your typical ‘to-do list’ app hacked together over two weekends on a diet of pizza and mountain dew by a 19 year old college freshman; it is an enterprise productivity app that emphasizes collaboration over individual tasks – something current collaboration and communication tools – including Yammer and 37Signals – don’t handle too well. I could explain the site’s functions in greater detail here, but I think you’ll find this video a lot more educational:

The company has been in the news since late 2009, given the superstar status of its founder. A $9M funding round lead by Bencharmark Capital followed a $1.2M angel round from Andreessen Horowitz.

I’m still playing around with the site. It’s apparent though from first impressions that this is a very fast and feature loaded software, perfect for collaborating with large teams on single tasks. The ‘assignee’ and ‘follow’ features (you’ll see that in the video above) are especially useful.

More thoughts on this in a couple of days.
